Harper County is At Risk!

Know the Risk

  • Family history, being overweight, and having high blood pressure increase risk.

  • Rural Kansans face higher diabetes rates due to limited healthcare access and higher prevalence of obesity and hypertension.

  • Lose just 5–7% of body weight (10–15 pounds for many people) to lower diabetes risk.

  • Replace sugary drinks with water, unsweetened tea, or flavored sparkling water.

  • Aim for steady sleep, stress management, and regular meal times.

Stay Active—Even Without a Gym

  •  Walking is one of the best tools for prevention. Even 20–30 minutes most days helps regulate blood sugar.

  • Many rural communities have walking trails, school tracks open after hours, or safe stretches of road for walking.

  • Chores like farming, gardening, or even brisk house and yard work count as physical activity.
